ytt: top gear + ken block = awesome

What happens when you combine my favorite television show and one of my favorite cars? Well, just another Ken Block-esque video. But if you haven’t seen it it’s worth a gander.

What I don’t quite get is how Ken has received permission to do all this on an active airfield. One of our local autocross sites is on an active airfield and as soon as the hangar opens we get shut down until the plane is gone. I guess the FAA can look past things when you’re making good television.

ytt: best automotive use of a shipyard

Shipyards and cars are a perfect match.  Oodles of pavement ripe for burnouts, donuts, power slides, and any number of other automotive trickery.  So without further ado, here are mentalgarage’s best automotive uses of a shipyard.

3. Kia Soul
You may have seen the commercials for these hamster cages.  The marketing guys at Kia recently decided to go for viral.  It’s not “whoa, cool”… more like “hey, cool”.

2. Gone in 60 Seconds
The moment I saw the Kia video I thought of the wrecking ball sending a police Jeep through a concrete wall.  The Eleanor chase scenes are among my favorite, right up there with Ronin.

1. Gymkhana Two
As a Subaru owner I am probably biased, but Ken Block’s initial slide to start the long awaited Gymkhana Two Video is straight jawdropping.  If you haven’t seen it, I actually prefer the Gymkhana Practice video, but alas, that involved an abandoned airfield.  After millions of views, Subaru and Ken Block’s sponsors dropped some major coin at Crawford Performance to build up a GR-chassis STi just for this video.  The result is nothing short of amazing.  Ken Block’s driving just seems to get better and better.

youTube tuesday: KITT!

does life get any better than this?  i submit that it cannot!
